Fifth Stop-Rufus, OR

Sammies resting after their morning walk

Ok, so Hood River was not our next stop. Unbeknownst to me the plan was to stop in The Gorge, where the Columbia River cuts through foothills, and there is constant wind.  Perfect for kitesurfing. It's dry, brown and dusty with windmills dotting the peaks of the hills.  The river is flowing so fiercely that the electric company doesn't need to use the windmills at all right now. The dam provides all they need for the area.

We found a campground right away using GPS on our phone, which was finally working.  The Rufus RV Campground's owner, Randy, was friendly and loved his dog, Clara. I loved Randy. He showed us cherry trees near the office where you could pick fresh cherries to your heart's content.

Stafford found friends to kite surf with right away.  The kiters park their RVs and cars along the Columbia River in The Gorge wherever they find a place to launch their kites.  They tend to congregate as kiting in numbers is much safer than kiting alone.

Ours is the wee one in the middle.

Ripe and ready to eat

  1. OMG I want to park myself under that cherry tree and feast. The other day I let Carson eat to his heart's content under a mulberry tree. In retrospect, that would have been a better decision if he were potty trained. Drat. I spent 5 days paying for that one in diarreah (oh god however you spell it) diapers.
